Why isn´t there a row 13 on aeroplanes?
In a plane with 13 or more rows of seats there is always a row 13. 13 is regarded as unlucky in many western countries, so some people won’t sit in a row numbered 13. It comes from both Old Testament numerology and the from the New Testament. Sometimes row 13 is numbered as row 14 so people conveniently forget or are too thick to realise it’s the same row as if it was numbered 13. Not seeing the number 13 on it makes it ‘safer’. It quite often makes for a comfortable ride because it fills up less than most seat rows, so sitting in row 13 can often give you a whole row to yourself. In the Far East, and especially in China, 13 is a lucky number, so it doesn’t work there! The luckiest number for the Chinese is the number 8, because it sounds like the word for prosperity. The unluckiest is 4 because it sounds like the word for death. Some Chinese planes don’t have a row numbered 4. Pretty easy to count though isn’t it?
