Why isn’t the U.S. government acting more quickly to bring Haitian orphans to the United States?
• We have already brought hundreds of orphans to the United States, and are maintaining a steady flow. Our top priority is the rescue and relief efforts for those suffering from the earthquake, including the health and welfare of American citizens. Among other rescue and relief operations, we are working 24 hours a day to evacuate Americans who want to be evacuated, to locate missing Americans, and to assist in attending to the health and welfare of those Americans still in Haiti. • Together with the Department of Homeland Security, we are processing and evacuating as fast as possible those orphans who were previously identified for adoption by American citizens. Approximately 600 orphans have been documented for travel to the United States since the earthquake. • Before children can be taken to the United States, we first have to be sure that the child is indeed an orphan.
