Why isn the DPW Operations being moved to Hartwell Avenue?
Several Town committees studied the pros and cons of moving the DPW Operations to Hartwell Avenue. In fact, the DPW Facility/Senior Center Re-evaluation Advisory Committee concluded, with one dissenting member, that the Town should locate the DPW on Hartwell Avenue and use 201 Bedford Street for both a Senior Center and private residences. However, the Board of Selectmen voted in February 2005 to keep the DPW on Bedford Street. Reasons for keeping the DPW on Bedford Street include its central location for customer service and snow plowing, possible environmental issues should the site be used for a different purpose, and the cost of developing Hartwell Avenue.
