Why isn the American government doing more to help the people of Haiti?
Here in the UK your question would generally be labelled absurd! It is obvious to anyone with a grain of sense that the almost immediate US response set the scene for probably the greatest humanitarian aid effort ever. Without the US taking control of the airport there would have been absolute chaos. Without the US military on the ground no civilian aid worker could safely distribute water and food. US helicopters constantly air drop supplies to regions impossible to access by land. Haiti is a dangerous place even in ‘normal’ times, politicians and the public services are corrupt and crime wide spread. The United Nations is an outdated and inefficient organisation and could never have managed the response in an appropriate manner. This was not an every day happening. Mistakes will be made. People will die due to inefficiency. Aid will take more time to be distributed than would be hoped for. Right now things are improving slowly and it will take years for any degree of ‘normality’ to r
