Why isn Prince Philip known as King Philip?
It’s a logical question, but the title of King is considered higher than queen. It is just sort of a historical fact. King’s were around for millenia before there was the first soverein queen. ======= In the British monarchy, the husband of a female sovereign does not have any automatic special status, rank, or privileges. Every single time it happens a unique decision was made. The husband of Mary I never received a British title, he was just King of Spain. The husband of Mary II was a co-monarch, not a consort. The husband of Anne was already a Duke, but he did not get another title except for Lord Admiral. Victoria’s husband retained his German title, but he was not made “Prince Consort” until they had 9 children and had been married 17 years. Prince Philip was a prince from birth so neither he nor his father had a surname. Unlike Albert he renounced his titles and adopted his maternal grandfather’s surname of Mountbatten before marriage.
