Why isn every diamond cut to ideal proportions?
A diamond cutter purchases rough stones according to price per carat. In the cutting process, a diamond can lose as much as 65% of its original weight. Sometimes, a cutter will try to retain carat weight at the expense of the right proportions in order to maximize the value of the polished stone. The following diagram exhibits the angles and proportions of the well-cut brilliant stone. At SOAR Systems, we recommend these proportions as they apply to round brilliant cut stones: • Depth percentage between 57.8 – 62.9, where mid-range would be optimal. • Table percentage 54 – 64. Again, mid-range is best. For all other diamond shapes: • Depth percentage between 56 – 70, where mid-range would be optimal. • Table percentage 54 – 70. Again, mid-range is best.
