Look at this forum thread. Windows XP has limited DOS support, so doom(2).exe may or may not work if you are using this operating system. Disabling sound FX and/or music may solve the problem. Instead, we recommend you use one of the following source ports (in alphabetical order): Boom, Chocolate Doom, EDGE, Eternity, GZDoom, jDoom, Legacy, prBoom, Skull Tag, Vavoom, ZDoom and, finally, ZDooMGL.
