This data allows them to evaluate the impact of influenza on mortality in the United States and the severity of the currently circulating virus strains. The 122 cities participating represent about one third of the annual flu deaths. Because the intent of the program is to provide a representative sample, it is not necessary for every city to participate in this program. Cities in Virginia that participate in this program are Richmond and Norfolk. Although no Northern Virginia cities are included, it should be noted that Washington, DC is included.
