Why is WSDOT realigning Red Cabin Creek and building a new bridge?

0

Currently, there is a culvert that passes underneath SR 20 for Red Cabin Creek. It is old, small and requires annual dredging to keep the water flowing. If we didn’t dredge, the culvert would plug up and water would flood the highway, causing road closures and potential damage to the highway. Dredging the creek costs tax payers money on an annual basis and can impact the environment in many ways. The culvert prohibits migratory fish from safely and efficiently passing under the highway. The End Result We will protect the highway by realigning the creek and replacing the culvert with a new bridge. Temporary closures of the highway and annual maintenance costs in dredging the creek will be eliminated. Removing the culvert will make it easier for cutthroat, coho and chum to migrate up Red Cabin Creek. Read more about our commitment to improve fish passage. Project Benefits • Safety – Replacing the culvert with a bridge protects the highway, which is a vital link for daily drivers as well
