Why is waterfront revitalization significant?
I didn’t realize how many local communities are trying to revitalize their waterfronts. Wenatchee, Richland, Bellingham, Seattle. If I were Seattle, I would tear that viaduct down tomorrow. The viaduct not only cuts the downtown off from the waterfront, but it just creates this nasty noise issue. Now they have a chance to tear it down and no one has the courage to do it. Why is the conference important? The idea (of the conference) was let’s bring some people together . . . and have some practical conversations. Most of these waterfronts have been mistreated and we’ve done environmentally bad things to them and they’ve been misused and unappreciated for so long. When you have these waterfronts in urban centers, what you want to do is make them accessible to the public.
