Why is water used during the rite of baptism?
As a sign and seal of a covenant of grace replacing circumcision, the water of baptism symbolizes the washing away of sin through Christ, as opposed to the cutting off of sin symbolized through circumcision. Thus we have a new covenant that revitalizes the old covenant, God with His people through the sacrifice of the Lamb, offered up by the Lamb as our High Priest.
