Why is water leaking from the front of my WhisperKOOL unit?

If there is water leaking from the front of your Whisperkool, it is probably a older XL or XLT (they have changed the design to a trough that does not clog), the older units had interior drain lines so that the water that would develop on the coil during the cooling process could flow through the unit and dump into the compressor pan.  Under the compressor is a pan heater, similar to that on a refrigerator.  In some parts of the country, a algae will grow, in other areas it is more like a mineral deposit, that clogs the drain line and the water builds up in the drip tray and then over flows.  It can leak down into the bottom of the unit, sometime it will even spray through the fans.

If this is happening then take the unit out of the wall, drill out the rivets from the top, there will be insulation over the cooling side of the unit, slice the tape so that the insulation will slide to the back. You can then take a long pipe cleaner and clear out the drain line.  Before you put the unit back together, if you had algae then get some algae retardant in granule or tablet form and put it in the drip tray, it won’t stop it but it will help lengthen the time before you have to clean it again.

This occurs when excessive build-up of dust collects on the interworking parts of the cooling unit, often from construction, and/or lack of regular maintenance. Both possibilities can result in a clogged drain line. WhisperKOOL units require a relatively dust-free environment. Please refer to pages 16 and 17 or your owner’s manual for more information.
