So why is this subject so important to Babergh people? Simple. All of us in Babergh, as in Suffolk and elsewhere, are in a race against time. By the year 2015 the ‘landfill’ site at Great Blakenham – where all of our black bin waste is currently buried in a huge hole in the ground – will be filled. There is a serious environmental cost involved in burying our waste in the ground – and that cost is growing. If we are to keep our council taxes down, then all of us are going to have to learn the four Rs of dealing with, and cutting down, our waste… reduce, re-use, recycle and recover. And that job has to begin now…not in 2015. Good things are already happening in our area. Currently, Suffolk is one of the highest performing authorities in the country for recycling, but as a community we can all do more. We are all in this together. If we do not take up the challenge of cutting our levels of waste the cost will be real and two-fold…to our environment…and in our pockets. The purpose of this
