UDOT is converting the $50-per-month Express Lanes decal system to an electronic payment system that will be live August 23, 2010. Electronic payment will allow more people to use the Express Lanes on an as-needed basis. It will also allow UDOT to better manage congestion in the Express Lanes to ensure that carpooling is still a benefit. Dynamic pricing will motivate drivers to carpool, as pricing will increase during peak congestion while carpoolers continue to use the Express Lanes without charge.
