Why is TracFone unsupported?
TracFone resells other carriers’ service at a discounted rate in exchange for the lowest priority on that carrier’s network. In our testing, we have found that a TracFone will not receive a text message even in a modestly sized alert of only 800 people. It is therefore very unlikely that TracFone users would receive text messages in the event of a campus emergency. Since we cannot support TracFone during an emergency, we have decided not to allow users to enroll them into Illini-Alert.
