Why is this Amtrak train called The Downeaster?
Though the Maine seacoast is located north of Boston and is the northernmost part of New England, it is traditionally called “downeast.” Back in Colonial days, Maine shipbuilders built sailing ships called “Downeasters.” Today, Amtrak’s Boston to Portland route along the New England shoreline has adopted the iconic name for its Boston, MA to Portland Maine route.
