Why is THINKamerica.org so important right now?
The 2008 presidential election is unique for many reasons. First, the 2008 race will be the first time since 1928 that neither the sitting president nor the sitting vice president is a candidate for president. This unusual situation offers a unique opportunity for voters to elect a president free from the usual distraction of the incumbent/challenger framework. Second, our nation’s political climate seems to have attained a previously unknown level of partisan contempt. Divisive issues such as abortion, gay rights and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have left the nation bitterly divided while equally important (but infinitely more solvable) issues such as education, health care and energy reform go unaddressed. Third, it is never too early to start thinking about the next election. If we do not speak now, with a strong voice, we will never be heard.
