Why is there such a stigma around people with mental health problems?

From my own experience there seems to be a stigma around mental health issues because people are ignorant about mental health issues and are too ashamed or embarrassedto be associated with you, when the exact opposite is needed. People with mental health issues need people to understand and just be there to talk to, help and try to understand or listen to our problems and to validate what we are going through. We don’t need criticism or bbelligerenceand when it comes from those in the mental health sector it just serves to make you wonder why they are in that job in the first place…..I got the feeling from my own mother last year that she was ashamed of me as I tried to get her to understand my diagnosis but she just didn’t want to know, and my father (whom I think was the root of the beginning of my mental health problems) more or less told me I was nuts, because I was suicidal. He then totally regaled in mocking me with my sister to my 14yr old niece(whom I had a special bond with)
