Why is there strong anti-Japan sentiment in China?

The main reason is lingering resentment in China over the Japanese invasion of China and consequent atrocities committed by Japanese forces during the Pacific War (World War II in Asia), 1931–1945.  The Chinese government encourages that resentment, through the media and education system, as a means of promoting Chinese nationalism and to undercut Japan’s efforts to gain a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council and to become a regional leader.
