It is a complicated question but the short answer is that Africa got left behind when humans were developing advanced civilizations. Europeans were colonizing the new world while Africans were dealing with their own mini-dark ages where any progressive ideas were stomped out. The Europeans were then in a position of power and they capitalized on the weaknesses of Africans by taking them as slaves. This only further weakened Africa’s position. In stead of building their infrastructure and working on advancing their civilizations, they were busy being dominated and taken advantage of by Europeans. After centuries of this the continent is so far behind developmentally that it is difficult to catch up. They have no major highways and almost no plumbing. They have virtually no education about sanitation and as a result of all these factors and many more, diseases spread rampantly and ravage the whole continent.
