Why is there so much conflict among professing Christians both within and outside their particular denomination?
The Bible tells us that there is a spirit of truth and spirit of error (1 John 4:6). The latter part of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century saw what was called the “Fundamentalist/Modernist Controversy.” Liberals schooled in Higher Criticism began to view the Bible as the mere product of Jewish culture. They began efforts to apply the “scientific method” to the Bible and questioned anything supernatural. They questioned the authorship of the various books. Within the existing denominations some seminaries became Conservative and others Liberal. General denominational meeting became divided. Following a period of relative peace and efforts at accommodation these divisions have erupted with great force and now make newspaper headlines as each side struggles for control of their denominational government.
