Why is there so much concern about the impact of the Japanese tsunami on the nuclear power stations?

The damage to Japanese society from a meltdown would be mind-bogglingly horrible. If the radiation spread to neighboring countries, destroying agriculture and wildlife…If major industries that the US depends on got impacted… (I was under the impression that the reactors survived the earthquake, and the tsunami caused the damage also). edit: in case you didn’t know why a meltdown is bad, large amounts of radiation would be released causing much damage to our bodies. Remember that we cover ourselves with lead aprons to protect our gonads from a little dental x-ray. With a massive release, we’d have no defense, as we don’t have lead shields for everyone (and every farm), and we can’t see, hear, smell or feel radiation to run away from it. (Not many people can have a geiger counter either).
