Why is there severe hair loss after delivery of a child?
Pregnant women have a heightened level of progesterone and estrogen. These hormones retain hair in pregnancy. When these levels drop suddenly after delivery, the hair slips into the telogen phase and falls after 3 months of delivery. The stress caused by pregnancy may also be contributory to the hair loss. The hair loss gets automatically stabilised in few weeks and all the fallen hair tends to grow back in 2-3 months thus this hair loss requires no specific treatment but reassurance. I have long hair and have recently noticed split ends. Can this lead to hair fall? Hair fibre is covered by a protective layer called cuticle, split ends (medically called trichoptilosis) happens when this cuticle layer gets stripped away and the underlying hair fibres are exposed. This fibre then splits longitudinally giving rise to split hair. This can happen due to chemical or heat abuse (dyes/styling gels/heat irons/dryers).
