Why is there only one cable TV company in Claremont?
While Time Warner (formerly Comcast) is the only cable TV company serving Claremont, there is no legal reason why there couldn’t be others. In fact, federal law prohibits cities from entering into exclusive franchise agreements with cable TV providers. The primary reason there aren’t other cable companies serving Claremont is economic; most cable companies don’t believe they can recoup the high cost of constructing a cable system, $15-20 million in Claremont’s case, in markets where they face competition from an existing cable company. There are several companies that do “overbuild,” and we’ve invited them to offer service here. However, they have chosen not to as they tend to operate in much larger communities with a higher number of potential customers.
