Why is there now a charge for pest control treatment of rats?
Mild winters and the ready supply of food from fly tipping, litter, discarded food and overfeeding of wild birds, has led to a significant increase in the rat population. Locally this has meant an increase in the demand for free rat treatments provided by the Council for residents. The cost is set to double this year to over 50,000. Due to the increasing costs of providing this service, the Council has reluctantly decided to charge for dealing with rats in people’s homes, unless the person receives income based means tested benefits. Many other local councils already charge for this service. Residents will be able to take advantage of competitive treatment charges by using our pest control contractor to deal with any rat problems they have. Commercial treatments usually cost 80 to 120, but if residents use the Council’s contractor, they will be charged a special rate of 46.81.
