Why is there no metalwork classes in british schools anymore?

Metalwork stopped at my school two years ago, since my school is now linked to a college which can offer better facilities and equipment for the subject. Students could take engineering at college in years 10-11. Also I think it was not one of the most popular technology subjects that people took on for GCSE.

They’ve been merged into Design & Technology classes. There are plenty of people of school leaving age who have undertaken apprenticeships or degrees in it, or with an interest for engineering, I know quite a few myself.

Someone probably said it was a health and safety risk in that they could injure themselves. I bet they also thought that if they merged all the design elements (metalwork, woodwork etc) together then they could save money. It seems that those higher up the ladder only want to save money and protect their backs in case something goes wrong.
