Why is there caffeine in soft drinks?
Manufacturers claim that caffeine is added to drinks in order to enhance the flavour. However, studies reveal that this may not be the case. Researchers in Australia proved that in taste tests, individuals were unable to distinguish between caffeinated and uncaffeinated beverages. Researches believe the real reason that caffeine is added to soft drinks is perhaps because it can provide a bit of a ‘boost’, and therefore cause soft drinks to be quite addictive. Dr Russell Keast, one of the authors of the study is calling for the Australian Government to consider banning the sale of caffeinated soft drinks to under-18s, since caffeine can cause many biochemical changes.
