Why is there black smoke coming from my exhaust on my peugeot 306 hdi diesel 2litre?
Hi, I’m assuming it’s when you throttle up? There is an exhaust recirculation device fitted to cut down emissions. It gets a bit choked with carbon from the exhaust if you are “stop / start” or city driving. I worked for Citroen for a while and they share the same engines with Peugeot. We had a lot of customers with complaints like this. The valve in the device gets gunged up (technical term) because of light throttle use. When you apply heavy throttle, as in overtaking, you will see black carbonised smoke. My solution used to be….. Hit the motorway, max revs to third gear a couple of times to clean the system out. I’ve seen a lot of people get ripped off over this issue. If the worst comes to the worst, the device (EGR valve) can be dismantled and cleaned.
Small amounts of grey/black smoke from a diesel is fine. It’s just the carbon dust from the diesel burning. When you rev a bit harder the pressure in the exhaust clears some out. If it is happening when at idle though this could be a number of problems like Oil filter, fuel filter or worse. Get it checked as soon as possible.
