Why is there a price difference between generic and branded medicines?
A generic medicine is a copy of the original branded product. Once the patent for the original product has run out, the pharmaceutical company who developed the medicine no longer has the exclusive right to produce and distribute this medicine. With regards to cost-efficiency IDA prefers to supply generic products whenever possible, opting for branded options only when they are more affordable or if they are compulsory for meeting funding requirements or if there are still valid patents in a particular country for those products.
