Why is there a Northern Australia focus on the Indigenous emissions trading initiative?
This initial focus reflects the fact that most of the research and on ground evidence on the carbon sequestration benefits resulting from traditional burning practices has been gathered from the tropical savanna area of Australia. However, Caring for our Country is supporting similar work being undertaken in other areas of Australia. We are investigating the legal framework for the creation of carbon credits for altered fire regimes, supporting local capacity and partnerships between the private sector and Indigenous communities and undertaking research on the scientific and market potential.
