The reason such a law exists is simply in recognition of the lesser of two evils. If a debtor is denied the ability to get a fresh start in life and to remain a useful productive citizen, even an honest person might be forced to less honorable extremes. It is better for society as a whole to allow a recognized, orderly means of liquidation and forgiveness than to have a debtor steal to pay debts or hide what assets he may have. 5.
