Why is the Water Authority calling for increased voluntary conservation?

0

Historic dry conditions in California and in the Colorado River basin have reduced the supply of imported water available to Southern California to the point where the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), the San Diego region’s primary water supplier, is withdrawing water from storage to meet current-year demands. In addition, there are several legal challenges facing the State Water Project that threaten the project’s ability to deliver expected water supplies to MWD and, in turn, our region. If dry conditions continue this year and into next year, it may be more challenging for water agencies to meet water demands in 2008. That makes increasing conservation efforts now so important. It will help keep more water in storage to meet water supply needs next year. Our water supplies also face uncertainties involving a series of complex legal challenges confronting the state water project.
