University of Pennsylvania Reports another Case of Meningitis By Sophia Keenan 16:42, March 9th 2009 Another student at the University of Pennsylvania has been hospitalized with meningitis. This is the fourth confirmed case of bacterial meningitis at the school. In February, three other students were hospitalized with the disease but they have improved. University officials said there is no evidence suggesting a connection between the new case and the cases occurred last month. Following those cases, more than 2,100 students have been given antibiotics from university health officials. As a precaution, all on and off-campus parties were called off. The cancellation applied to all gathering where significant interaction with food, drink, or intimate contact was likely. The good part is that the university’s spring break is this week, meaning relatively few students are expected to be on campus, which decreases the risks of new meningitis infections.
