Why is the U.S. turning a blind eye to justice?
By Stephanie Kulaga “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Martin Luther King Jr. The International Criminal Court will have the potential to wipe out human rights violations worldwide, yet there are seven nations that voted against it China, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Qatar, Israel, and surprisingly, the United States. What does the United States have against the International Criminal Court? Our government might fear that an international court could be used politically against the United States. Yet the ICC has instituted safeguards against this. Refusal to participate in the ICC may, in itself, promote negative political press. It seems irrational that President Bush would want to “unsign” the treaty that supported the court. The only result of our opposition will be the estrangement of the United States from its allies, all of whom fully support the court. It is not in our best interest to oppose the ICC and, more importantly, it is not in the best interest of mankind. A
