Why is the term pay week-ending day being used instead of payday?

For most benefits the pay week-ending day will be the same day as their payday. However for the majority of people on Jobseeker’s Allowance that is not the case, with their payday often several days after their benefit week-ending day. For consistency we are therefore encouraging the use of the term pay week-ending day.
