Why is the steam distillation method used?
Tea Tree is very volatile, easy to distill, and the cheapest method is steam distillation. It also has the side benefit of converting some of the intermediate compounds in the leaf oil into more stable, more bio-effective compounds. Extra terpinen-4-ol is created this way, adding to the plant’s biosynthesis of this the most important compound in the oil.
