Why Is The Spider Family Referred To As Arachnida?
The spider family earns the title of Arachnida attributing to the imaginative stretch of Greek mythology. It was believed by some people that there was some magic in the web that is woven by the spider. Catering to the notion, the Greeks ‘weaved’ a story of a girl Arachne, who was great at the art of weaving. The story further narrates that once Arachne challenged the Goddess Athene to a contest. Unfortunately for the poor girl, she proved herself better than the goddess in the competition, leaving her apoplectic and immensely jealous about the fact that a mere mortal girl was able to defeat her and get away with it. Overcome by consuming rage and overpowering jealousy, Athene finally transformed Arachne into a spider, who was eternally doomed to endure the fate of weaving her web with the thread spun from her own body being given an endless nemesis of the unforgivable sin of challenging and defeating a Goddess.
