Why is the song dynasty divided into two periods?
The Northern Song Dynasty was overthrown by the Liao Dynasty. A relative of the imperial family named Zhao Gou went to the south of China and built the southern Song Dynasty. They were originally not called the Northern Song and the Southern Song but present historians give them that name as their capitals are in the north and the south respectively.
