Why is the salt used on the roads in winter brown in colour?
Very simple, the pinky/brown colour is the natural colour of the rock salt mined at Winsford Rock Salt Mine. The salt is this colour due to the inclusion of a small percentage of sandstone marl which lies in bands through the salt beds. The salt deposits in Cheshire were left 200 million years ago when a huge inland sea evaporated and easterly winds are believed to have blown sandy soil across this sea as it dried leaving the product we see today.
