Why is the RON of PMS rating being reduced from 96 to 95?
One of the main drivers for the new specifications is the introduction of cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel with reduced benzene content and reduced total aromatics. Shell currently has two grades of petrol available in New Zealand. Regular petrol with an octane of 91 and premium petrol with an octane of 96. As part of these changes, the RON of the premium petrol will be reduced from 96 to 95, which is the specified octane for premium petrol as detailed in the New Zealand Petroleum Products Specification Regulations. The change to 95 octane means Shell will be aligned with the regulations, and also most international specifications for premium petrol, such as the Australia Federal fuel specifications, the European petrol specifications (EN228), and the Motor vehicle manufacturers recommendations for fuel requirements (the World Wide Fuel Charter).
