Why is the Queen ant the only one with wings…?

The queen only has wings when she is a “virgin” queen. When spring comes here and all the males of the same species and other queens gather in an area and mate in what is called a nuptial flight. After she has mated she tears off her wings and goes to start a new hive. The males are also winged and die after they mate. If you see a ant with wings then it is either a virgin queen or a male.
