The magic of match play is on full display this weekend at the historic Harding Park Golf course alongside the shores of San Francisco’s Lake Merced with the playing of the biennial Presidents Cup Matches. On Thursday the teams competed at foursomes (alternate shot) and Friday’s six matches were contested at fourball (better ball). Today there will be five alternate-shot matches in the morning and five better ball matches in the afternoon. The Presidents Cup concludes on Sunday with 12 singles matches. The two team captains, Freddie Couples and Greg Norman, have had to show their versatility as leaders with 12 gifted individual performers who seldom compete at match play and only on rare occasions play golf in a team environment. Professional golfers are much more comfortable and familiar with the grind of 72-hole stroke play tournaments.
