Why is the Outpatient Center needed?
Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the US; fortunately, 75% of children with cancer can now be cured. As with the majority of adult cancers the majority of childhood cancer is largely done as an outpatient. Today, a child diagnosed with leukemia will average approximately 135 outpatient visits during their treatment. Currently there is no facility equipped to meet the medical and supportive outpatient needs of these children even though the third largest percentage of children diagnosed with cancer reside within Palm Beach County. The services offered by the outpatient center will be similar to those found at larger teaching hospitals in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, but patients will not need to travel great distances to receive them.
