Why is the Obama nominee for Health Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, being filibustered?
Republicans’ main issue of contention with Sebelius is the fact that she is not against abortion. She has been criticized for accepting campaign contributions from a doctor who performed abortions and has been described by some as having a “pro-abortion” stance. Last week she vetoed a bill that would increase restrictions on late-term abortions, but defended her position by saying: “The provisions in this bill that would allow for the criminal prosecution of a physician intending to comply with the law will lead to the intimidation of health care providers and reduce access to comprehensive health care for women, even when it is necessary to preserve their lives and health. While I agree that we should try to reduce the number of abortions, it cannot be at the increased risk to the life or health of women.” According to an article in today’s Wall Street Journal, she is “expected to be confirmed” tomorrow.
