Why is the Nepali Congress so afraid of having a directly elected head of government?
Acharya: Our friends in the Congress don’t really have a good argument regarding this. The only argument that exists is that if the people directly elect the head of government, it will lead the country towards authoritarianism. I have been saying that a directly elected prime minister is necessary since 2054 B.S (2001). Currently, there are 25 of us in the party, including 10 in the central committee, who think that the head of government should be directly elected. We have even laid out why such a provision is necessary as well as its disadvantages and remedies for the disadvantages.
