Why is the Neighbourhood Watch called Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch, if there are also members in Wilropark and Breaunanda?
Initially, we were launched in Roodekrans for the residents of Roodekrans. However, soon after our launch, residents from Wilropark were so enthusiastic that they requested to join us. We gave them the option of forming their own neighbourhood watch, or to join us. They opted for the second choice, and were thus part of the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch since its inception. The same applies for Breaunanda, although they became part of us at a much later stage. Patrollers from the 3 suburbs patrol all areas since 1 March 2009. It is extremely hard work to co-ordinate the activities of a neighbourhood watch, but by joining forces as neighbours of all 3 suburbs we are sharing resources and standing together to fight crime. Research in community policing has clearly shown that these organisations are not sustainable when members adopt a “one street mentality”. What does it help you to secure your own street, if you are hijacked in the next street?
