Why is the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) distributing federal funds?
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) acknowledges that the nonprofit arts industry as an important sector of the economy and is deserving of assistance through the stimulus package. Because the NEA is uniquely positioned to provide grants throughout the country, the Recovery Act awarded $50 million to the NEA to distribute stimulus funds at the national, regional, state (state arts agencies), and local levels to preserve jobs in the arts industry.
