We are currently developing proposals to move the Museum of Transport to a new site on the River Clyde as part of the 500 million Glasgow Harbour development. There are three main reasons for doing this. Kelvinhall was not originally designed as a museum and we currently share the site with an international sports arena. This means environmental conditions in the building are quite poor for many of the collections, particularly those made of wood, resulting in some deterioration and damage. The new proposed 2 acre site is at Yorkhill quay, and is one of the few remaining intact areas of historic quayside, and being situated alongside the Glenlee ship will enable us to better interpret Glasgows historically important shipbuilding industry. A purpose built museum will provide us with a larger more flexible space. We will be able to increase the number of collections on display, change displays more easily, provide new facilities and develop new themes, making connections with other techn
