Why is the Magna Carta significant?
The Magna Carta is significant because it was one of the biggest influences on the United States Constitution. It was the document that made the King at the time (King John) renounce certain rights of his and respect some legal procedures. It wrote about Habeas Corpus, the allowance of appeal against an unlawful imprisonment. The US Supreme Court has explicitly referred Lord Coke’s analysis of the Magna Carta as an antecedent of the sixth amendment’s right to a speedy trial.
