Why is the legacy of elizabeth (TUDOR) I so different than Elizabeth (windsor) IIs?
First of all would be the times they lived in. Elizabeth I ruled at a time when the British Empire was just starting to grow. Exploration was going on. Britain was competing with Spain to have the most colonies and get the most gold, etc. from the Americas and other places. Elizabeth II has reigned while most of the British Empire is coming apart, most of it’s former colonies are independent nations.Elizabeth II has been in power at the time of some of the greatest technological advances in history, but I’m sure there were scientific discoveries made in the time of Elizabeth I. From a personal standpoint, Elizabeth I never married, Elizabeth II has been married for over 60 years and has 4 children. But it’s really hard to compare since the times they live in or lived in are so different and the country is so different. It’s like saying why was Franklin Roosevelt’s presidency so different from Abraham Lincoln’s, since they were both in office during wars; or even why is George Bush Jr’s
The most superficial would be that Elizabeth I chose to remain unmarried in order to safe-guard the crown, whereas Elizabeth II lived in a time (post Victoria) where she could be the regent and still be married to a man. Unless you go to pre-Roman rule of Britannia (even then some women only ruled small areas of the country), Elizabeth was the first woman to successfully rule England for several decades. Elizabeth II was the 3rd, so the notoriety wasn’t quite the same.
